South Indian Flavour: Mysore Rasam

 

How many of us have demanded our friends from down South to get some Mysore rasam for us? The dish is simply delicious and takes us on a gastronomic journey worth relishing. When craving comfort food, indulge in a bowl of rasam rice and let all your worries go down the drain. Here’s an easy recipe for you!

Ingredients

  • 1 cup tur dal
  • 3 tsp soup coriander
  • 1 tsp cumin seeds
  • Half teaspoon black pepper powder
  • 6 whole red chillies
  • Half a cup of coconut grated
  • 1 tsp turmeric powder
  • Salt to taste
  • 3 teaspoons tamarind pulp
  • 2 tsp ghee

For Chhokk:

  • 1 tsp mustard seeds
  • 4 whole red chillies
  • Pinch of asafoetida (hing)
  • Little bit of curry leaves
  • 1 tsp oil

Method:

Heat 1 tsp of ghee in a pan and fry all the spices and coconut until it becomes brown. After cooling, grind it in a mixer. Add 4 cups of water, dal, salt and turmeric powder to the pressure cooker to boil. Mash the dal after it softens. Now add the ground mixture and tamarind pulp and mix it well. Heat the ghee in a pan and add mustard seeds, whole red chili, a pinch of asafoetida and curry leaves and fry them. Add the tadka to the rasam. Serve hot with rice.
