After Hollywood film producer Harvey Weinstein was outed for his deviant behaviour towards many actresses, many other women felt empowered enough to come out and spoke about their horrific experiences of sexual harassment, rape and molestation in the Hollywood industry.
Priyanka Chopra’s mother, Madhu Chopra, also had a story to share about her daughter Priyanka Chopra. Post her victory at the Miss World 2000 pageant, Priyanka was just at the tender age of 17 when she was sexually harassed by a Bollywood director. Her mom says that rejecting this offer costed her to lose 10 other films.
In an interview, Priyanka’s mom revealed the gruesome details saying, “…a designer told her (Priyanka) that the director’s brief was to dress her in itsy-bitsy clothes. The director had said, ‘What is the point of having a Miss World in front of the camera if we cannot show her as her beautiful self?’ Priyanka refused to do the film.”
She also shared another light-hearted story where the director was polite. “She was just 17 when she entered the industry, so I accompanied her every minute of the day till about three years ago. So a gentleman meets her and says: ‘Will your mother sit outside while I narrate the story to you?’ Priyanka told him, ‘If it is a story that my mother can’t hear then it is a story that I cannot do’.”
The film industry proves its sexism once again, where women are dressed in skimpy clothes just to add sex appeal. When will it end? We hope more Bollywood actresses come forward and speak out against their harassers.
