Why You Must Never Drink Water Standing Up

While the elders must have told you several times to not stand and drink water, how many times have you actually paid heed? You tend to dismiss their beliefs as ‘silly’ before science hits you with the truth! Yes, they were right all along. And no, drinking water standing near the refrigerator will not do you any good. Here’s why you must never drink water when in standing posture.

What does Aryuveda say?

According to Ayurveda, when you stand and drink water, your body isn’t able to completely replenish its required nutrients. Your nerves are in a state of tension, and your body activates its fight mode, which also increases the speed at which you gulp down water.

Risk of Kidney Disease

It is known that kidneys filter better in sitting position. With the volume and speed in which water flows, when we drink in an erect posture, the impurities tend to collect in blood and bladder. This can lead to damaged kidneys.

Joint Pain

The effect of the high pressure produced in upended drinking water,  falls on the entire biological system of the body, thereby causing pain in your joints. Apart from this, drinking water in standing up position causes the balance of fluid in the joints of the body to shake, leading to arthritis.

Lung damage

You will be surprised to know that standing and drinking water can also damage your lungs. In fact, when you stand and drink water, it can lead to a lack of oxygen in both food pipe and wind pipe. If it happens repeatedly, that is, if you drink water only after standing regularly, then you can be prone to lung and heart disease.
