What is the #MeToo Campaign?
The campaign took off from Twitter when the #MeToo started trending worldwide. Alyssa Milano asked people to share with #MeToo in tweets if they have ever been assaulted.
In 2017, Hollywood producer Harry Weinstein’s sexual assault case was revealed to the media. More more than 70-80 women in Hollywood came forward to tell their stories. This incited women across the world to start calling out people in power who had ever sexually assaulted or harassed them in any way without their consent.
It became a worldwide campaign as millions of women started sharing their stories and encouraging others to do so. On social media, accounts started popping offering legal services and counseling for survivors who had revealed their traumas. It was also chosen as the ‘Person of the Year’ by Time magazine for its impactful phenomenon. The more hitting campaign, ‘Times Up’ was inspired by this movement.
How did it start in India?
Bollywood actress Tanushree Dutta came out with her traumatic story where she was sexually harassed by fellow actor Nana Patekar. She also claimed how Vivek Agnihotri tried to make a move on her. She stated that this happened almost 10 years ago on the sets of ‘Horn Ok Pleasss’ when she was just starting out. This news brought fire on several actors, journalists and powerful people in the media industry. For workplace harassment and other kinds of sexual harassment, women started opening up like never before and these men were blamed and accused by employees, colleagues, and ex-workers.

I am sorry from the bottom of my heart- and sad that I was the cause of this hurt

If there is one thing more important to me than even my work,
it is to be a good human being.
And I have tried to be that person.
And now, I will try harder.
