As 2015 was one of many surprises in fashion Sruthi Rajan got together ace fashion designers to give us a peak into what’s in store for fashion in 2016. stay updated.
“There is a return to classicism in the offing— quieter, non-bling apparel will be the order of the year. Textures on the garments will supplement heavy ornamentation.”
Keep ornaments to the minimum. Let your clothes do the talking. Maybe one statement piece would be more than enough. Team up the dress with a high-heel sandal to exemplify its beauty and the heavy designs on it.
“This season is all about sequin dresses and gowns, whether you choose to go for a subtle-sparkle or an all-out shimmer-and-shine look. Shimmer is high on drama and connotes a fancy occasion while being feminine and eye-catching, all at once. But don’t limit the sequins to only dresses and gowns; you may experiment it on other kinds of clothes, like blazers, tunics, pant suits and shirts. This trend had made a big splash in the 2015 spring/summer and autumn/ winter collections all over the world, and is here to stay through 2016.”
Fancy up a simple jeans-and-tee look with a trendy sequin belt, scarf or sparkly ballerinas. If you are not comfortable wearing sequins on your clothes, don’t worry; just wear a sequined head-band, bracelet or shoes in the initial days. This will ease it out for you into adding the sparkle on your clothes.
“I think the revival of Indian handloom fabrics and weaves will be a big trend in 2016. They will be worn in all contexts, from ethnic Indian wear to western silhouettes, and will be seen on the national and international runways in all its rich glory.
Classy clutches go well with the amalgamation of Indian and western outfits and works as a great accessory to complete your ensemble
“This year, you will see flowy silhouettes like palazzos and gowns, gathered skirts and capes. Peplum tops, high-waist box-pleat pants, coupled with crop-tops, jumpsuits, sarees teamed with jackets and bustiers, along with the traditional silhouettes like the kalidars and jalabiyas will be the focus in 2016. “Recently, fashion has seen a slow turn towards a mix of styles from the ’80s and more recent times, and the trend will continue. Silhouettes with a relaxed fit, layers, bespoke jackets and intricately embroidered outfits make for a unique statementlook this season. Designs on sleeves, skirts, tunics and palazzo pants will have a dramatic and feminine flare. When it comes to embroidery, remember that less is more. Mirrors will be the highlight of the year, along with zardosi and resham works. The year will also revolve around neutral colours and blush tones like hazy nougats, amber browns, burgundy and all-time classics like the beige and gold.”
Go for ethnic, chunky statement desi designs when it comes to jewellery on gathered skirts. Beaded necklace and kadas will go with the outfit.
“The trend that I believe would be big in 2016 is athleisure. Carrying on in this relaxed trend is the nightwear-inspired dressing style—pyjamas that work from night to day, and made famous by designers like Alexander Wang, Gucci and Dolce & Gabbana. The primary colour scheme of the year would be red, blue, black and white. Floral and burnt orange are the prints that will own 2016.”
You can play with pieces that complement your outfit rather than overshadow it. Let the make-up natural. Keep pink and mauves to go with the pantone colours for the year.

“According to me, the trends that would be all the rage are flared, ankle-length culottes paired with a blouse or top. A white or solid-coloured shirt can be worn with flared or printed culottes and teamed with a pair of sandals. They work on any body-type and size, and are perfect for Mumbai rains. Kaftans in various lengths (maxi, mid and mini) are other trends that will be hit this year. Bright colours like turquoise blue, shades of purple, rust and burgundy and baileys, and quirky prints that have an exotic appeal would be in fashion.”
Opt for trendy sunglasses. Large bags would soon be out of fashion, but if you could also wear interesting body-sling bags across your shoulder. Sandals that have a two-inch block heel would be great with any outfit.
