6 Easy And Incredibly Effective Exercises for People With Diabetes

Do you get enough exercise? If you’re like an average Indian, the answer is no — and that’s especially true for those of us with diabetes. We would rather live with insulin injections or a boxful of pills than taking out a few hours every day for exercise. On World Diabetes Day, and with that in mind, New Woman lists 6 great workouts for the diabetic people.

Walking: Brisk walking done at a pace to raise the heart rate is an aerobic exercise, and studies show beneficial effects when people with diabetes participate in aerobic activities at least three days a week for a total of 150 minutes.

Tai Chi: Tai chi, a series of movements performed in a slow and relaxed manner over 30 minutes, is an excellent choice of exercise for type 2 diabetes.

Weight Training: Plan for resistance exercise or weight training at least twice a week as part of your diabetes management plan — each session should include 5 to 10 different types of lifting involving the major muscle groups.

Yoga: This can help lower body fat, fight insulin resistance, and improve nerve function — all important when you have diabetes.

Swimming: Swimming is another aerobic exercise and an ideal one for people with diabetes because it doesn’t put pressure on your joints.

Stationary Bicycling: A stationary bike is ideal for people with diabetes because you can do it inside. Bicycling improves blood flow to your legs — a great benefit for people with diabetes — and burns lots of calories to keep your weight at healthy levels.
