5 Things To Know About The Cricketing ‘Hurricane’ Called Harmanpreet Kaur

These are happy times for Indian cricket, what with the India having beat Australia by 36 runs to make it to the finals of the ongoing ICC Women’s World Cup on Thursday.

And the one lady, who played a crucial role behind the magnificent win happens to be Harmanpreet Kaur.

Harmanpreet played a gem of an innings, scoring 171* to propel India to 281. She smashed the Australian bowlers to all parts of the ground and was absolutely brutal in her power hitting. Her 115-ball knock was studded with 20 fours and seven sixes and was rightly adjudged the player of the match award.

Harmanpreet Kaur’s mother delivered a powerful message after her daughter’s heroics for India in the semi-final against Australia in the ICC Women’s World Cup on Thursday. “Girls must be empowered, shouldn’t be killed in womb. The way my daughter made the country proud, other girls should also be encouraged,” she told ANI.

And while we are still getting over the magnificent innings she pulled off last night, here are 5 things we thought you ought to know about the batting hurricane.

  1. The 28-year-old Harmanpreet, was born in Moga, Punjab on March 8, 1989.
  2. Her knock of 171 runs against Australia on Thursday is the second highest score by an Indian in women’s ODIs. Her teammate Deepti Sharma tops the list with 188 runs.
  3. She made her One Day International debut against India’s arch-rivals Pakistan in the 2009 Women’s Cricket World Cup.
  4. Her Test debut came in 2014 during India’s tour of England.
  5. Harmanpreet became the first Indian cricketer to play in foreign T20 leagues when she signed a contract with the Sydney Thunder of Women’s Big Bash League in Australia.

 

At the same time, Twitter exploded with praises from cricketing greats such as Sachin Tendulkar, Virat Kohli, Anil Kumble and Kapil Dev. The new President of India Ram Nath Kovind @ramnat kovind also tweeted his praise for the Punjab hurricane.
