Tunnel No. 33, Shimla
A tunnel connecting Shimla to Kalka named Tunnel No. 33 is supposedly haunted by a British engineer named Barog. In the early 19th century, Barog was commissioned by the government to construct a rail road that connected Shimla to Kalka but was then abandoned as the tunnels he dug out from opposite sides didn’t meet. He killed himself due to the humiliation and was buried next to Tunnel No. 33. In the present day, his ghost has been spotted roaming around the tunnel and he tries to talk to passersby. People have claimed that he’s a harmless and friendly spirit who will reply if you call out his name!
Bangarh Fort, Rajasthan
This 17th century fort looks like a historic monument with a rich history during the day but by night, it becomes a living horror movie. The fort is said to be one of the most haunted places in India and entry to the area is completely restricted after sunset. Bangarh was built by Emperor Madho Singh, with the approval of Guru Bala Nath, an ascetic who meditated nearby. Guru Bala Nath gave Emperor Madho Singh an ultimatum; if Bangarh’s shadow would fall on the ascetic’s retreat, the city would be completely destrtoyed. Unfortunately, it did and the whole city got cursed without any luck in being rebuilt. Since then, locals have always claimed to hear unexplainable noises coming from the fort like women screaming, bangles breaking and strange music. Faint shadows and lights also come from within the fort at nightfall. Spooked out enough yet?
Feroz Shah Kotla Fort, Delhi
Built by Feroz Shah Tughlaq in 1354 and later left in ruins, the fort is now said to be the home of several djinns who dwell in its dark corridors. Visitors are requested to avoid visiting the fort at night as the djinns would attack and haunt anyone around, especially women who aren’t accompanied. Every Thursday, locals light candles, write letters and offer food to the djinns in order to have their wishes granted. The djinns are said to be fond of sweets, milk and grains and have a very large number of devotees seeking their help regularly.
GP Block, Meerut
GP Block is a dilapidated two-storey building in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh that is completely deserted and has been locked up. Some locals have claimed to see a woman’s spirit on the rooftop while some others have seen a woman wearing red clothes going in and out of the house. Some have even seen 4 men drinking alcohol around a single candle. Due to these strange apparitions in the locked up house, most people avoid going down the eerie path that leads to the house but you can always interact with locals asking about their sightings!
Grand Paradi Towers, Mumbai
Located in one of the most expensive places in Mumbai, people would seldom expect a place like that to be haunted. Grand Paradi Towers, however, has seen more than twenty suicides since its construction in 1975. These freakish incidents have created an uneasiness in the society and many believe that the towers are haunted. There have been several havans and pujas conducted in a flat on the 8th floor, where 3 generations of the Dalal family leaped to their deaths. The flat has since never been resold to anyone. Asking the locals stories about the building’s horrifying past will definitely make you have chills up your spine!
Brij Raj Bhavan Palace, Kota
The hotel is said to be haunted by Major Charles Burton, who lived in the property before dying during the sepoy mutiny of 1857. In the present day, his presence is still felt in the hotel where guards have said they’ve heard a man speaking in English when no one was around and ordering them to stop sleeping or smoking. His spirit isn’t harmful although there are instances of guards being slapped awake while sleeping on duty. Guests claim to feel a presence in some parts of the hotel, which made them feel discomfort. Would you spend a night here?
Writers Building, Kolkata
During the day, the building is bustling with people and is used as the secretariat building of the state government of West Bengal. Formerly being the residence of the administrative staff and the junior servants, the place now has several vacant rooms that experience lots of supernatural and paranormal activity. The building is completely deserted after 7 pm but passersby have claimed to hear giggles, screams and cries during the night. Creepy, isn’t it?
Savoy Hotel, Mussoorie
Madam Frances Garnett-Orme was a British spiritualist who was staying with her friend Miss Mountstephen in the summer of 1911. She was murdered by poisoning one day after her friend left for Lucknow and her murder still remains an unsolved mystery to date. Garnett’s spirit is still said to haunt the hotel as some guests claimed that their doors would automatically open while some others claimed to see her apparition in the corridors, roof and staircasses of the hotel. Guests who came in close contact with her reported that she would check them carefully and then disappear into thin air. She also softly sings and whispers to herself while looking extremely sad.
D’Souza Chawl, Mumbai
The chawl had a well where people washed their clothes and filled water from it. However, on an unfortunate day, a woman went to fill water and fell into it due to it having no boundary walls. Her screams for help went in vain and she drowned in it. In the present day, people who passed by the chawl at night claimed to see the spirit of the lady wandering around the well after sunset and disappearing before dawn. Although she doesn’t harm anyone, people are told to avoid visiting the well and the chawl at night.
Raj Kiran Hotel, Lonavala
A room behind the reception on the ground is said to be haunted, with eerie lingering silence and sensations of a supernatural presence. A guest claimed that her bedsheet was rudely pulled off while she was sleeping by an unknown force while another claimed seeing ghostly apparitions in the room. Some also saw strange blue lights shining on their feet while some always felt someone watching them the whole time they stayed there. Incredibly creepy, isn’t it?
